A fun thought exercise: switching stylistic choices and fashion sensibilities, but not exact outfits. Henceforth, the Artist's Comments are written by UnoSombrero, because she's a words person.

"THE DEVIL'S DOCTOR" --  aka what if Istvan actually used this nickname for himself rather than just letting people call him that

Design Considerations:
-Had to put silhouette first.  Bigger = scarier.  (Original: cape, hat, mantle)
-Had to include deliberately anachronistic elements.  (Original: based on early mystery men, but with a top hat)
-Had to include "superheroic" elements.  (Original: mask, gloves, that theatrical flair)
-Had to be almost straight black.  (See: Batman)
-Couldn't get rid of barbed wire, because that's pretty much Istvan's shadow and he couldn't be rid of it if he tried.
-Had to put a knife somewhere on his person.

Solutions!
-Maintained mantle, long coattails in place of cape.  Istvan can already manifest horrifying rotten vulture's wings at will, so that took care of the rest.
-Suitcoat design more typical of the early-to-mid- rather than the late 1800s.  Hat typical of much earlier.
-Istvan wouldn't know superhero stuff, but plague doctors wore masks and gloves (and as a bonus looked extremely distinctive and eerie).  Also, doctor.
-As a spectre, Istvan can't quite manage straight black, but he's giving it an honest shot.
-Kept the wire.  Also added hints of ghostly chlorine gas, because that's one of the things that happens when he's got the wings out.
-Knife hidden in inside jacket pocket (that's what he's reaching for).

Results:
-Looks way way way more frightening than he'd really want to on a daily basis.  The dude has problems seeming approachable as it is.
-Would be completely jealous of Edmund's splendid colors.  FFF why can't ghosts have color his uniform would be so colorful

"THE IMPOSSIBLE SOLDIER" -- aka what if Edmund emphasized his impossible-to-kill WWII veteran status rather than "being a superhero"

Design Considerations:
-Had to be based on a military uniform of his era.  (Original: WWI, Austro-Hungarian)
-Had to incorporate details from a number of ranks and services, without ever indicating rank.  (Original: mix of enlisted/officer, infantry/cavalry)
-Had to include nonstandard, "splendid" decorative elements.  (Original: bandolier feathers and chain, the bandolier itself)
-Had to indicate some other, additional profession rather than straight soldier.  (Original: medic)
-Couldn't change hair/goatee.
-Had to put a brass pocket watch somewhere on his person.

Solutions!
-Based off the dress uniform of US Marines (even though he wasn't a Marine), which is a style that hasn't changed much since WWII.
-Modified collar to match that of other services, added Navy garrison cap (bonus: garrison cap is direct descendant of Istvan's field cap), no stripe on pants.  No rank insignia.
-Added stylized triple-7 logo to sleeve and a number of presumably magical spanglies where medals would usually go.  Red piping.
-Carrying a bag with to put things in -- say, books and papers and other linguistics-related things.  Translated Japanese during the war.
-Kept hair/goatee!  Because who cares about regulations anymore it's been decades.
-Pocket watch pinned to sleeve.  This is what people did before wristwatches.

Results:
-Looks sharp!  Also rather generic, which is kind of the point behind uniforms, and would be less startling to people he's intending to punch in the head.
-Would have a lot more trouble working with Istvan because aaaaaaaaaaa

I really enjoy all these memes you're doing. It's great to see the author and illustrator interaction.
